Yes, it is possible to reduce the memory requirement and increase the computation speed in springback analysis.
Mesh coarsening, a new feature in LS-DYNA 960, can be used to reduce the memory requirement and increase the computation speed for springback analysis. Many unnecessary fine elements can be merged into bigger elements with this feature. A fine mesh is necessary for a good forming simulation and very important for setting the stage (i.e. accurate stress) for good springback analysis. It is often not crucial to have the fine mesh everywhere during unloading (springback analysis). It has been proven (based on many tests) that the coarsening algorithm used by LS-DYNA can be safely used for most production jobs.
After most of the unnecessary elements are removed from the model, we can do the springback analysis for nearly all the production jobs.
